A video showing a woman manually producing sachet water for public consumption in what appears to be an unhygienic environment has surfaced online, sparking reactions from social media users.
The video emerged online days after calls for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, amid concerns over the circulation of suspected fake and substandard products and drugs in Nigeria.
The clip was shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, by an influencer identified as Khan.
In the video, the woman, dressed in an orange top and wrapper, was seen manually transferring water from a large container into another bucket covered with cloth.
She then appeared to connect the container to a machine used to package the water into sachets for sale.
A young girl, believed to be the woman’s daughter, was also seen assisting with the process by collecting the sachet water into a bucket as it was produced.
The setting in which the water was being processed has raised concerns among social media users, particularly over the hygiene conditions and whether the operation had the required regulatory approval.
Unlike the process shown in the viral clip, properly treated drinking water generally goes through several stages before it is distributed to consumers. These may include screening, coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, depending on the water source and treatment system.
The video has therefore renewed concerns about the need for proper regulation and compliance with hygiene standards in the production and sale of sachet water.
Sharing the clip on X, Khan expressed concern over what was shown in the video, captioning it: “Na God dey really protect us for this country.”
Reacting, one @giwa_ibraheem said, “The person who constructed this machine must be empowered by the Government cos for him to have gotten this sense of development, it must not be trashed. As for the producer of the dirty sachet, you should face the law by endangering people’s lives.”
@AbiAkindele reacted: “This is exactly why I’m careful with sachet water. You don’t know what they’re doing behind the scenes. It’s pure wickedness. NAFDAC should investigate this place.”
@Khanstilldayy noted; “I have stopped buying canned drinks for a while now.”
