Nollywood actress Adunni Ade has revealed that some of her Christian fans unfollowed her on social media after she publicly disclosed that she is a Muslim.
The actress made the disclosure during an interview with media personality Chude Jidenowo, where she spoke about her faith and the challenges she faced before openly identifying as a Muslim.
According to Adunni Ade, she initially found it difficult to publicly speak about her religion because of the nature of the Nigerian film industry.
She alleged that openly identifying as a Muslim is “almost forbidden” in Nollywood because of the way some people may perceive an actor who does so.
Ade said she eventually decided to speak about her faith because she was tired of keeping it private, adding that she had visited different churches but personally found Islam to be the religion that works for her.
She said, “In my line of work, it is almost forbidden for you to publicly say you are a Muslim. You could be looked down upon for doing that. It is just something that I noticed.
“Islam for me is not all about outward look. It is what is within. How you treat others. I came out publicly with my religion because I was tired of keeping it a secret.
“I have been to different churches, including MFM, Redeem, others; I am not saying Christianity is not a good religion. It is not for me to say. I am just saying what works for me is Islam.”
The actress further disclosed that her decision to speak openly about her faith came with a reaction from some of her followers.
According to her, some Christian fans unfollowed her after she revealed that she is a Muslim, while others sent messages to her private account, with some praying for her and others expressing their concerns about her religious beliefs.
“And I lost some fans for revealing that I am a Muslim. They unfollowed me. Some people even came to my DMs to fight out whatever spirit they thought was within me. Some were praying for me,” she said.
Ade, however, said she was also welcomed by many Muslims who embraced her after she publicly identified with Islam.
“A lot of Muslims embraced me. But I really don’t care about that. It is just for me and what works for me,” she added.
