RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — At least 12 people have been killed and 309 others injured following an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, raising fears of a wider military confrontation in the Middle East.
The attack occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, according to Saudi authorities. The Saudi-led coalition blamed Yemen’s Houthi movement for the strike, which prompted renewed calls for retaliation and increased international concern.
US President Donald Trump has said he is considering whether America should join Saudi Arabia’s military operations against the Houthis. His comments have raised questions about whether the latest escalation could draw the United States more directly into the conflict.
Victims from Several Countries
According to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation, the 12 people killed included Saudi nationals and citizens of Bangladesh, the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Syria and Sudan.
Authorities reported that 309 people were injured, with some suffering critical injuries and receiving medical treatment in hospitals.
The attack also caused damage at the airport, forcing authorities to suspend operations while security officials assessed the situation.
The incident is among the deadliest attacks on a Gulf Arab state since the wider regional conflict intensified.
Trump Considers Possible US Involvement
Speaking after the attack, Trump left open the possibility of American military participation in Saudi-led operations.
The US president said Washington would examine the situation before making a decision.
His comments came amid growing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, whose attacks on Saudi territory have intensified in recent days.
Any decision by Washington to participate directly in military strikes could widen the conflict and increase the risk of further retaliation across the region.
For now, the United States has not confirmed that it will join the Saudi military campaign.
Saudi Arabia Vows a Response
The Saudi-led coalition condemned the airport attack and promised a decisive response.
The strike followed other attacks targeting Saudi aviation facilities earlier in the week, adding to concerns about civilian safety and the disruption of international air travel.
Airport authorities temporarily suspended operations as officials assessed the damage and worked to establish when flights could safely resume.
Several foreign governments and diplomatic missions also issued warnings to their citizens about security risks around the airport.
Why the Attack Matters
The latest violence comes amid an intensifying conflict involving Saudi-backed forces and the Houthis in neighbouring Yemen.
Saudi Arabia has supported forces fighting the Houthis, who control significant territory in Yemen. The renewed fighting has increased concerns about regional security, civilian casualties and the safety of important transport routes.
A direct US military role could further escalate the confrontation, depending on the targets, scale and duration of any operation.
For civilians, the immediate concerns remain the treatment of those injured, the safety of travellers and the possibility of additional attacks.
Utelnova will continue to follow developments as Saudi authorities investigate the attack and Washington considers its next move.
