The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians against a fake online publication claiming to contain a special announcement about governorship candidates in six states ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission identified the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano, describing the circulating publication as false and insisting that it did not originate from the electoral body.
INEC issued the warning in a public notice on Monday, October 12, 2026, urging Nigerians to disregard the misleading information and avoid sharing it on social media.
According to the commission, it did not issue any special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states, contrary to claims contained in the circulating document.
The electoral body warned that spreading unverified election-related information could confuse members of the public, particularly as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Advises Nigerians to Verify Election Information
The commission urged Nigerians, political parties and other stakeholders to obtain accurate electoral information through its official communication channels.
It specifically advised the public to consult its official website, verified social media accounts and news portal before accepting or circulating announcements concerning candidates and electoral activities.
INEC also called on citizens to exercise caution when encountering documents and political claims shared through unofficial online platforms.
The warning comes amid growing political activity and preparations for the 2027 elections, with candidate lists and party nominations attracting considerable public attention.
Why the Warning Matters
False announcements about political candidates can mislead voters, create unnecessary controversy and generate confusion about who is officially recognised to contest an election.
For this reason, voters are encouraged to verify candidate information directly through INEC rather than relying on viral messages or unverified documents.
The commission reiterated its commitment to keeping Nigerians informed through its official communication channels and urged the public to help prevent the spread of electoral misinformation.
