The billionaire says the proposed giveaway will be the first of several initiatives, but details about eligibility and distribution remain unclear.
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to give one share of his space company, SpaceX, to every child in America next year, in a move that could extend company ownership to millions of young people.
Musk made the announcement on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a post on his social media platform, X.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” he wrote.
A potential multibillion-dollar giveaway
The proposed initiative could reach approximately 72 million children across the United States. Based on recent share-price estimates cited by news outlets, the distribution could be worth around $10.5 billion.
However, Musk has yet to disclose how the shares would be transferred, the precise age requirements for recipients or when the distribution would begin in 2027.
It also remains unclear whether the proposed giveaway will operate through existing children’s investment accounts or a separate arrangement.
Why the announcement matters
Giving children shares in a company could provide them with an opportunity to benefit from future growth in its value. However, shares can also lose value, meaning the potential financial benefit is not guaranteed.
The announcement comes amid broader discussions about giving children a financial stake in the economy. Other business leaders have also pledged company shares or financial contributions to initiatives supporting young people’s long-term financial future.
SpaceX is known for its rocket launches, spacecraft development and Starlink satellite internet service.
What happens next?
For now, Musk’s statement represents a public pledge rather than a fully explained distribution programme. More information will be needed to establish the eligibility rules, legal arrangements and practical steps for delivering the shares.
Utelnova will continue to follow developments and report further details as they become available.
