Mexico Finally Approves Reno Omokri’s Appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador

Mexico has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador, ending months of uncertainty over his diplomatic posting.

The Mexican government has granted diplomatic approval for former presidential aide Reno Omokri to serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico.

Omokri announced the development in a post on his X account, explaining that José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, delivered the diplomatic approval, known as agrément, to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The approval clears a major hurdle in Omokri’s diplomatic posting, which had remained pending for several months.

Omokri to Cover Four Countries

Beyond his primary assignment in Mexico, Omokri is expected to have concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

This means his diplomatic responsibilities will extend beyond Mexico to include Nigeria’s relations with the three Central American countries.

Omokri expressed gratitude to God while announcing the development, describing the Mexican government’s acceptance as a significant step towards his diplomatic assignment.

How the Appointment Was Delayed

President Bola Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners on March 6, 2026, following the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees in December 2025.

Omokri was assigned to Mexico City, but his posting remained pending because the Mexican government had yet to communicate its formal acceptance.

In August, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries whose ambassadorial appointments were still awaiting formal approval.

With Mexico’s agrément now granted, Omokri has cleared a major diplomatic hurdle, although the remaining formalities of his posting may still need to be completed.

The development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s diplomatic representation in Mexico and the countries covered by Omokri’s concurrent accreditation.
