Victor Olatunji, Serge Aurier and Daniel Cousin: Africans Who Made Champions League History

African footballers continue to make their mark in the UEFA Champions League, with several players recording goals and assists in the same match.

Nigerian forward Victor Olatunji joined a select group in September 2024 when he scored and provided an assist on his Champions League debut for Sparta Prague in a 3-0 victory over RB Salzburg.

Before Olatunji, Ivorian defender Serge Aurier achieved the feat for Paris Saint-Germain against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2015, while Gabonese forward Daniel Cousin did so for Rangers against Lyon in 2007.

Olatunji’s achievement was particularly significant because he became the first Nigerian player to score and assist on his Champions League debut, according to Opta statistics reported at the time.

The achievement highlights the growing contribution of African players to Europe’s elite club competition.

Although a definitive ranking of the ten youngest African players to score and assist in a single Champions League match still requires further verification, these examples demonstrate the continent’s continuing presence on the European stage.
