Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, leaving Nigeria’s movie industry and fans mourning the loss of one of its familiar faces.
The actor’s family announced his death in a statement shared on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
In the announcement, the family expressed grief over his passing and thanked fans and well-wishers for their support during the difficult period.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read.
The family also appealed for understanding and appreciated those who had offered prayers and support. No specific illness was disclosed in the announcement.
Actors Guild of Nigeria confirms death
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also acknowledged Duru’s death, paying tribute to the veteran performer.
The development has brought renewed attention to his decades-long contribution to Nollywood, where he earned recognition for his acting talent and appearances in numerous Nigerian productions.
His breakthrough role in Rattlesnake
Duru rose to prominence through his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed 1995 film produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
He began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark and went on to feature in several films, building a career that spanned more than three decades.
Among his other credits were Blood Money, Stigma, The Locals and Mboputa. His performance in Mboputa earned him the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards.
Beyond acting, Duru also served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. In 2007, he received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award.
A career remembered
Duru’s death comes months after he publicly dismissed online reports suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening illness. In June 2026, he criticised the circulation of misleading footage and claims about his health.
His passing marks the loss of an actor whose work formed part of Nollywood’s development across several generations.
As tributes emerge, fans and colleagues are remembering his performances and contribution to Nigerian cinema.
As of the latest reports, the family had not announced funeral arrangements.
