Nigerian gospel singer and pastor, Nathaniel Bassey, has reportedly become the first African gospel artist to surpass one billion views on YouTube, marking a major milestone for African gospel music.

Figures from his official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed that the channel had accumulated approximately 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of November 1, 2026.

The achievement comes more than 15 years after the channel was created in March 2011.

Bassey’s growing digital success has been linked to his gospel music, worship sessions and the international popularity of the Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship programme he founded in June 2017.

What started as a midnight praise and worship session on Instagram Live has grown into an international gathering, attracting participants from different countries.

The October 2026 edition recorded impressive viewership, with its opening session attracting more than four million views, while the grand finale, known as the Hallelujah Festival, reportedly attracted over 4.3 million views.

Bassey is widely known for popular gospel songs such as Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro, You Are God and Tobechukwu.

Interestingly, the gospel minister has previously maintained that the Hallelujah Challenge is primarily about worship and spiritual devotion rather than generating revenue.

His latest achievement highlights the growing influence of Nigerian gospel music and the power of digital platforms in taking African Christian music to audiences around the world.
