Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured a historic place in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after producing an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered a remarkable performance in Wednesday’s semi-final encounter in Rabat, Morocco, to book their place in the championship match for the first time in the country’s history.

After a goalless first half, Nigeria returned with renewed determination and broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Queen Joseph.

The goal gave the Flamingos the confidence to push forward, and their efforts paid off again in the 71st minute when Awawu Bashiru doubled Nigeria’s advantage.

Bashiru was not finished. She struck again in the 80th minute to complete her brace and extend Nigeria’s lead to 3-0.

Brazil managed to pull one goal back through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but the late response was insufficient to stop Nigeria from securing a memorable victory.

A Historic Achievement for Nigeria

The victory represents a major milestone for Nigerian football, as the Flamingos have reached the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time.

Nigeria’s previous best performance in the competition was a third-place finish at the 2022 edition in India.

The latest victory also makes the Flamingos the first African team to reach the final of the competition.

Japan Await Nigeria in the Final

The Flamingos will now face Japan in Saturday’s final as they chase their first-ever world title at the U-17 level.

Japan secured their place in the final after overcoming defending champions North Korea in a penalty shootout.

With history already made, the Nigerian girls will now have another opportunity to make the country proud by bringing home the world trophy.

For millions of Nigerian football supporters, the hope is that the Flamingos can complete their remarkable journey with a historic championship victory.
