Cooking Gas Prices Surge as Nigerian Households Face Fresh Financial Pressure

Rising cooking gas prices are putting additional pressure on Nigerian households, with major Lagos suppliers recording significant increases in wholesale prices within days.

Nigerian households are facing fresh concerns over the rising cost of cooking gas following sharp price adjustments by several major suppliers in Lagos.

Reports published on November 3 showed that wholesale cooking gas prices increased between October 30 and November 2, with some suppliers raising their prices by as much as 16 per cent.

According to the reported figures, Navgas increased its depot price from ₦1,250 to ₦1,450 per kilogram, while NIPCO and 11Plc moved from ₦1,225 to ₦1,390 per kilogram.

Rain Oil and Techno Oil also adjusted their prices from ₦1,200 to ₦1,370 per kilogram.

Dangote recorded a comparatively lower price of ₦1,050 per kilogram in the November 3 report.

Families Feel the Pressure

The latest increases have raised concerns among households already struggling with the high cost of food, transportation and other essential commodities.

For families that depend on cooking gas for daily meals, higher refill costs mean more money must be set aside for basic household needs.

The situation has also renewed concerns about the possibility of some households returning to firewood and charcoal because of the rising cost of cleaner cooking alternatives.

Why Are Cooking Gas Prices Rising?

Cooking gas prices are influenced by several factors, including supply availability, transportation expenses, distribution costs and market conditions.

Although locally produced gas can help reduce dependence on imported supplies, price differences among suppliers remain significant.

The reported depot prices are wholesale rates, meaning consumers may pay more at retail refill stations after transportation and other operating costs are added.

What Nigerian Consumers Should Know

Consumers are advised to compare prices at different gas refill stations before making purchases.

They should also ensure that their cylinders are properly weighed to avoid paying for less gas than they receive.

With household budgets already under pressure, any further increase in cooking gas prices could make daily living more difficult for many Nigerian families.

Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether the recent price increases continue or whether improved supply will bring some relief to consumers.
