Ghana Demands Justice After Two Citizens Die in New York Within Days

The Ghanaian government and members of the Ghanaian community in the United States are demanding answers following the deaths of two Ghanaian nationals in New York within the space of a week.

The incidents have sparked grief and concern among Ghanaians at home and abroad, with families calling for thorough investigations and accountability.

One of the victims was 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, who was fatally shot on October 29, 2026, while walking to school in the Bronx, New York.

The teenager, who had reportedly moved from Ghana to the United States about a year earlier, was said to have dreamed of becoming a medical doctor.

His mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, travelled from Ghana to New York following the tragedy to attend to funeral arrangements and seek justice for her son.

Speaking before her departure, she made an emotional appeal, saying: “I want justice for my son, that is all.”

The second victim, identified as 24-year-old Joseph Owusu, was reportedly found dead after being missing for approximately two weeks.

Owusu, who worked as a caregiver and served as a church organist, was found in New York under circumstances that remain under investigation.

His family has called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation to establish exactly what happened and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed sadness over the deaths and assured the affected families that the government would engage relevant United States authorities.

Ghana’s diplomatic mission in New York has also visited Joseph Owusu’s family, offering condolences and support.

Authorities have indicated that an autopsy is being conducted in Joseph’s case as investigations continue.

The two deaths have heightened concerns within the Ghanaian community, with calls for answers, justice and improved protection for citizens living abroad.

For the affected families, the priority remains finding answers and ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the deaths of their loved ones are fully established.
