The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Diewait Ikpechukwu, who reportedly passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged illness.
News of his death emerged on Friday, November 6, 2026, with the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, paying tribute to the late actor.
According to reports, Ikpechukwu died on Thursday, November 5. His passing was also confirmed by the AGN leadership, although details surrounding his illness have not been publicly disclosed.
The actor’s death represents another significant loss to Nollywood, particularly among the generation of performers who helped establish and strengthen Nigeria’s film industry.
Before becoming a familiar face on Nigerian television screens, Ikpechukwu had an interesting background in sports.
He was reportedly an outstanding footballer during the 1970s, playing as a right winger and attracting attention for his performances.
He featured for football teams including Blue Diamonds of Nsukka and Kaduna Rocks. His footballing ability reportedly earned him an invitation to the Green Eagles, Nigeria’s former national football team.
However, his interests eventually extended beyond football. He later ventured into broadcasting, where he worked as a radio sports commentator.
Ikpechukwu also pursued his education, attending Kaduna State Polytechnic, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Marketing.
He subsequently worked with the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), where he served in a marketing management position before retiring.
Ikpechukwu’s journey into entertainment began with television productions.
He reportedly became involved in an NTA Enugu production titled Second Chance, which featured veteran comedian Chief Zebrudaya.
His transition into feature films came in 1998 when he appeared in Evil Men, a production directed by the late Chico Ejiro.
The film also featured established Nollywood actors, including Pete Edochie, Alex Usifo and Liz Benson.
His performance helped introduce him to a wider audience and opened opportunities for more appearances in Nigerian movies.
Over the years, Ikpechukwu became particularly recognised for portraying traditional rulers, kings and other influential characters.
His authoritative screen presence made him a recognisable personality among Nollywood audiences.
Some of the productions associated with his acting career include Royal Palace, The Guilty, The Guilty 2, Across the River, Python King, The August Meeting, Omera and Ìjé Love.
In the 2022 production Ìjé Love, he portrayed King Obumneme.
His career reportedly spanned more than 25 years, during which he contributed to several productions in the Nigerian movie industry.
Apart from his work in front of the camera, Ikpechukwu also played an active role in the professional development of younger entertainers.
He served as the pioneer chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria’s Enugu State chapter.
During his time in the guild, he reportedly organised seminars and encouraged aspiring actors to understand the different opportunities available within the filmmaking industry.
He also advised upcoming performers to remain patient, dedicated and professional while building their careers.
His experience across football, broadcasting, business and filmmaking reflected a career that extended beyond acting.
The death of Ikpechukwu comes at a difficult time for the Nigerian entertainment industry, which has recently lost other respected performers.
His passing follows the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, whose death also generated widespread reactions among colleagues and fans.
For many movie lovers, Ikpechukwu belonged to a generation of actors whose performances helped shape the identity of Nollywood.
Although further details about his funeral arrangements had not been publicly announced as of the time of reporting, his death has renewed conversations about the contributions of veteran actors to the development of Nigerian cinema.
As colleagues, friends and admirers reflect on his career, his performances and contributions to the industry remain an important part of his legacy.
Utelnova extends its condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and fans of the late Diewait Ikpechukwu. May his soul rest in peace.
