Nollywood filmmaker Segilola Ogidan has brought an important healthcare conversation to the big screen with her latest psychological thriller, The Hospital Chronicles: The I.C.U., which made its debut at the 15th edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Lagos.
The movie explores sensitive issues surrounding medical negligence, high-risk pregnancies, patient safety and illegal organ trading through a suspense-filled hospital storyline.
The film was screened on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at Filmhouse Landmark in Lagos, as part of the festival’s official selection. The screening was followed by a red-carpet event and an interactive session involving the filmmaker and members of the production team.
A Story of Survival Inside a Hospital
The Hospital Chronicles: The I.C.U. follows the story of Bukky, a young Nigerian woman admitted to the intensive care unit of a prestigious hospital after experiencing pregnancy complications.
However, what should have been a place of treatment and recovery becomes a frightening experience as she encounters a disturbing situation involving illegal organ traders who want to harvest her womb.
As she struggles to survive, the story raises difficult questions about the safety of patients, accountability within healthcare institutions and the vulnerability of people who depend on hospitals during medical emergencies.
Although the film is fictional, its subject matter touches on concerns that many families can relate to, particularly the importance of receiving safe and responsible medical treatment.
Segilola Ogidan Reveals Personal Inspiration Behind the Film
Speaking during the post-screening discussion, Ogidan disclosed that the project was partly inspired by her personal experience with medical negligence.
According to the filmmaker, an experience that should have been relatively straightforward nearly cost her life because of negligence.
She explained that the experience influenced her decision to develop a story that would draw attention to the challenges patients can face within healthcare facilities.
Ogidan also revealed that the illegal organ-trading element was introduced during the writing process after her co-writer suggested adding a thriller dimension to the original drama.
The production team subsequently conducted research to develop that aspect of the storyline.
Her explanation provides a personal background to the film and shows how difficult experiences can inspire creative projects that address important social concerns.
Star-Studded Nollywood Cast
The production features several familiar faces in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Its cast includes Abimbola Akintola, Bucci Franklin, Demola Adedoyin, Etta JoMaria, Kadaria Ahmed, Kamo, Michelle Dede, Oyemen Ehikhamhen, Ozzy Agu, Temiloluwa Ami and veteran actress Tina Mba.
The film was produced by Chiamaka Ezenwa and Boma Akpore, with Segilola Ogidan leading the creative direction.
Bucci Franklin, who plays the hospital’s managing director, also spoke about the challenges involved in bringing such a sensitive subject to the screen.
He expressed appreciation to a Lagos hospital that provided its facilities for the production, helping the filmmakers achieve a realistic hospital environment.
Franklin further encouraged Nigerians to be careful when selecting healthcare facilities for themselves and their families, stressing the importance of making informed decisions.
He also acknowledged the efforts of medical professionals who continue to provide quality healthcare services.
What to Expect Next
The Hospital Chronicles: The I.C.U. is the first instalment in a planned film series designed to use storytelling to examine issues affecting patients and healthcare delivery.
Following its AFRIFF screening, the production team is expected to continue promotional activities and engagements ahead of an anticipated commercial cinema release in 2027.
The project adds another interesting dimension to Nollywood’s growing interest in stories that combine entertainment with important social issues.
For Ogidan, the film provides an opportunity to turn a difficult personal experience into a creative work that encourages conversations about patient rights, medical responsibility and the need for safer healthcare environments.
As Nigerian audiences await its wider cinema release, the production has already introduced a subject that goes beyond ordinary entertainment.
