A viral social media video featuring nursing students dancing inside hospital-related areas has led to disciplinary action at Madonna University, with one student reportedly expelled and 14 others suspended.
Madonna University, Elele Campus, in Rivers State, has taken disciplinary action against 15 final-year nursing students following the circulation of a viral TikTok video recorded within the university’s teaching hospital.
According to reports, one final-year nursing student, identified simply as Mercy, was expelled, while 14 other 500-level students were suspended over their involvement in the video.
The video showed a group of nursing students dancing in different locations, including a hospital waiting area, staircase and bus.
The footage was reportedly part of a social media trend popularly referred to as the “Gen Z nurses” challenge, in which healthcare workers and nursing students create dance-related content in clinical environments.
The video reportedly carried a Pidgin English caption suggesting that patients should not fall sick because “Gen Z” nurses were now in the hospital.
How the video went viral
Reports indicate that the video was originally uploaded in August before attracting wider attention after being shared by social media blogs in September.
A shorter version shared online on September 1 reportedly attracted more than 1.7 million views on X by Saturday.
The TikTok account associated with the original video had reportedly been made private by Saturday evening.
The controversy surrounding the video appears to centre not simply on the dancing itself but on the fact that the recording was made within a teaching-hospital environment while the students were undergoing professional nursing training.
University confirms disciplinary action
Madonna University’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chima Achu, confirmed that disciplinary action had been taken.
Achu told PREMIUM TIMES that the video was recorded inside the university’s teaching hospital and said the institution was preparing an official response expected on Monday.
The university’s position has therefore not yet been fully detailed publicly.
NANS appeals for clemency
The development has also attracted a response from the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS.
The students’ body acknowledged that the conduct was inappropriate and inconsistent with the discipline and professional standards expected of nursing students.
However, NANS appealed to Madonna University to reconsider the severity of the punishment, particularly the expulsion.
The association argued that the affected students had already invested years, resources and effort into their nursing education and that expulsion could have serious consequences for their academic and professional futures.
NANS called for the expelled student’s punishment to be reconsidered and suggested that a stern warning or another corrective disciplinary measure could be considered instead.
Debate over social media and professional conduct
The incident has sparked a wider discussion about the limits of social media content among students undergoing professional training.
While social media has become an important part of young people’s lives, professional programmes such as nursing require students to understand the responsibilities attached to working in healthcare environments.
The controversy has also raised questions about whether disciplinary measures should focus primarily on punishment or on correcting behaviour and helping students understand professional expectations.
For now, the university is expected to provide a fuller official position on the matter.
The case has become another example of how a short social media video can quickly move beyond entertainment and create serious academic and professional consequences.
Utelnova will continue to monitor the development and provide updates when the university releases its official statement.
