JUST IN: Macron to Embark on State Visit to Nigeria in October

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to embark on a state visit to Nigeria later this month as both countries seek to strengthen their diplomatic and economic partnership.

According to a report by TheCable on Thursday, October 8, 2026, Macron’s visit is scheduled for October 28 and 29, barring any changes to the programme. French officials have reportedly begun arriving in Nigeria to hold discussions with their Nigerian counterparts ahead of the visit.

The planned visit is expected to provide an opportunity for Macron and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review areas of cooperation between Nigeria and France, including trade, investment, energy, technology and cultural relations.

The visit will also serve as a reciprocal engagement following President Tinubu’s state visit to France in November 2024, during which both countries discussed issues including finance, energy transition, solid minerals, trade and investment.

France has described Nigeria as an important partner in Africa, with bilateral relations growing particularly in the economic and cultural sectors.

Macron last visited Nigeria in July 2018, when he held talks with then-President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja before travelling to Lagos for engagements focused on culture, entrepreneurship and innovation.

If confirmed, the October visit would mark Macron’s return to Nigeria after eight years and could further deepen cooperation between the two countries.
