Suspected gunmen have abducted three people, including two employees of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), in Ibadan, Oyo State, in the third reported kidnapping incident linked to the institute in 2026.
The latest attack occurred on Thursday, October 8, at the institute’s premises in the Idi-Ayunre area of Oluyole Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns about the safety of workers and residents.
The victims were identified as Mrs Eunice Babalola, head of CRIN’s Central Nursery, Mr Kehinde Gbalajobi, an agricultural superintendent, and another man who resides in the institute’s Senior Staff Quarters but is not an employee.
According to reports, Babalola and Gbalajobi were abducted while walking from the Central Nursery towards the Senior Staff Quarters, where Babalola intended to collect some personal belongings.
The third victim was also reportedly seized by the gunmen.
Gunmen Attempted to Abduct More People
Sources familiar with the incident said the suspected kidnappers later attempted to seize additional victims at the institute’s Central Nursery.
However, security personnel stationed at the location reportedly repelled the attackers following an exchange of gunfire.
The incident has heightened fears among workers, particularly because previous kidnapping incidents have also been reported at the research institute this year.
Kidnappers Reportedly Demand ₦120 Million
Reports indicate that the abductors have contacted the victims’ relatives and demanded a total ransom of ₦120 million for their release.
The reported ransom demand has added to the anxiety surrounding the incident, as colleagues and relatives await further developments.
Dr Kayode Ayegboyin, chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions at CRIN, described the incident as distressing and called for the safe return of the abducted individuals.
Police Begin Rescue Operations
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction and announced that security operatives have launched a manhunt for the suspected kidnappers.
The police spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said operational efforts were ongoing to rescue the victims safely and apprehend those responsible.
The command also urged members of the public with credible information that could assist the operation to contact the police through established emergency channels.
Third Reported Kidnapping Incident in 2026
The latest attack follows two earlier kidnapping incidents linked to CRIN in March and May 2026.
The repeated incidents have raised questions about security at the institute and the protection of workers, visitors and residents within its premises.
As rescue efforts continue, the immediate concern remains the safe return of the three abducted individuals.
