Manchester City delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, October 11, defeating Liverpool 3–0 at Anfield in the Premier League as Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored in the second half.
The victory extended City’s perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season to six consecutive wins, while Liverpool suffered their first league defeat of the campaign.
The match remained goalless for more than an hour, but the contest changed dramatically after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.
City took advantage of their numerical superiority, scoring three times to silence the home crowd and strengthen their position at the top of the table.
Haaland Breaks the Deadlock
Manchester City opened the scoring in the 65th minute through Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.
After Jeremy Doku created danger in the Liverpool penalty area, the ball fell into Haaland’s path, allowing him to fire a powerful shot into the net.
The goal gave City the breakthrough they had been seeking in a closely contested encounter.
Haaland’s strike also shifted the pressure onto Liverpool, who were already playing with 10 men following Gravenberch’s dismissal.
Doku Produces a Stunning Finish
Just three minutes after Haaland’s opener, Belgian winger Jeremy Doku doubled City’s advantage with an excellent finish.
Doku moved inside before curling the ball into the top corner, leaving Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker with little chance of making a save.
The goal underlined City’s attacking quality and made Liverpool’s task even more difficult as the home side tried to recover from the setback.
Cherki Completes City’s Victory
Manchester City added a third goal in the 78th minute through French midfielder Rayan Cherki.
Cherki showed excellent close control inside the penalty area before finishing past Alisson to complete a memorable afternoon for the visitors.
The goal sealed a 3–0 victory and confirmed City’s dominance during the decisive stages of the match.
Liverpool Struggle After Gravenberch’s Red Card
Liverpool competed strongly during the opening stages and created opportunities to score before the dismissal.
However, Gravenberch’s second yellow card proved a major turning point. City increased the pressure and scored their three goals after Liverpool were reduced to 10 players.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola expressed dissatisfaction with the refereeing, arguing that the first yellow card had been harsh. Nevertheless, City capitalised on the situation to secure all three points.
The defeat was Liverpool’s first Premier League loss of the 2026/27 season.
What the Result Means for the Premier League Table
The victory moved Manchester City to 18 points from six matches, maintaining their perfect league record and putting them three points ahead of second-placed Arsenal at the time of the match report.
Liverpool, meanwhile, dropped to ninth following their first defeat of the campaign.
City will now turn their attention to their next Champions League fixture, while Liverpool must regroup ahead of their next Premier League match.
Can Manchester City Maintain Their Winning Run?
City’s victory at Anfield sends a strong message to their Premier League rivals, particularly after an intense match in which they had to withstand Liverpool’s early pressure before taking control.
Haaland’s finishing, Doku’s individual brilliance and Cherki’s contribution demonstrated the team’s attacking options.
For Liverpool, the challenge will be to respond quickly and address the problems exposed during the second half.
With the season still in its early stages, both clubs have plenty of football ahead, but City’s six wins from six give them an impressive platform for the campaign.
