Nigeria has lost one of its notable public figures, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, a veteran journalist, diplomat, politician and historian who died at the age of 86.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed the death in a condolence statement released on Saturday, October 17, 2026, describing Cole as a distinguished Nigerian who devoted his life to journalism, diplomacy and public service.
Reports citing family sources said Cole died in London on Saturday morning.
From the newsroom to international diplomacy
Cole made his mark in Nigeria’s media industry, serving as Managing Director of the Daily Times, one of the country’s prominent newspaper organisations.
His work in journalism placed him at the centre of national conversations about governance, public accountability and the role of the press in a democratic society.
He later moved into diplomacy, representing Nigeria abroad as an ambassador to Brazil and Argentina. He also served as Special Adviser on International Relations under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
His career brought together journalism, political engagement and international relations, giving him a place in several important chapters of Nigeria’s public life.
Tinubu pays tribute to his legacy
In his tribute, President Tinubu praised Cole’s contributions to Nigeria, particularly his work in journalism and diplomacy.
The President noted that, as Managing Director of the Daily Times, Cole upheld the responsibility of the press to hold public officials accountable and strengthen democratic governance.
Tinubu also extended condolences to Cole’s family, friends, professional associates and others mourning his death.
A life spanning journalism, politics and public service
Born on August 4, 1940, Cole lived through significant periods in Nigeria’s history and participated in public affairs through several professional roles.
Beyond journalism and diplomacy, he was involved in politics and was associated with the Social Democratic Party in the 1990s.
His death marks the end of a long career that connected the media, government and international relations.
As tributes continue to emerge, his contributions to journalism and Nigeria’s diplomatic service remain central to his public legacy.
May his soul rest in peace.
