Cristiano Ronaldo’s hopes of winning another Ballon d’Or have suffered a setback after the Portuguese superstar was left out of the 30-player shortlist for the 2026 award.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was notably absent from the nominees announced by France Football on September 8, despite helping Al-Nassr secure the Saudi Pro League title.

Attention has instead turned to a new generation of contenders, with Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé among the names attracting attention ahead of the ceremony.

Kane enjoyed an outstanding season, scoring 73 goals for club and country, while Yamal strengthened his reputation as one of football’s brightest young talents. Lionel Messi also made the shortlist after another productive campaign with Inter Miami and Argentina.

The 2026 ceremony is scheduled for October 26 at the London Palladium in England.

Can Ronaldo Still Return to the Ballon d’Or Spotlight?

At 41, Ronaldo remains one of football’s most recognisable figures, with an extraordinary record of individual awards and goals. However, his omission from this year’s shortlist means he cannot win the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or.

His absence also highlights the changing landscape of world football, as younger stars compete for the individual honour once dominated by Ronaldo and Messi.

For supporters, the debate now centres on who deserves to succeed the previous winner, Ousmane Dembélé, and whether Kane or Yamal will emerge with the prestigious award.

What do you think? Can Cristiano Ronaldo return to the Ballon d’Or shortlist in the future, or has football entered a new era dominated by younger stars?
