A sudden downpour and a surge of worshippers at a Durga Puja celebration in eastern India have left families mourning, as authorities investigate suspected safety failures.
At least 19 people have died and 25 others have been injured in a stampede at a religious festival in Kolkata, the capital of India’s West Bengal state, following a sudden rush of people amid heavy rainfall.
The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening, October 17, at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, where large crowds had gathered to celebrate Durga Puja, an important Hindu festival.
According to reports, heavy rain prompted people to seek shelter, creating a sudden surge in the crowded area. The resulting crush left several people dead and others injured.
Seven Arrested as Authorities Begin Investigation
Authorities have reportedly arrested seven people in connection with the incident as investigations focus on crowd control and safety arrangements at the venue.
Early reports have raised concerns about narrow access routes, limited exits and the management of the large crowd. Investigators are expected to establish the precise circumstances that led to the deadly incident.
The festival site was closed following the tragedy as authorities took steps to investigate what happened.
Government Announces Support for Victims’ Families
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed concern over the incident and visited victims receiving treatment in hospital.
The state government announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh and a government job for the family of each deceased victim, according to India’s public broadcaster. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced assistance of ₹2 lakh for each deceased person’s next of kin and ₹50,000 for each injured victim.
The announcements came as families faced the difficult task of identifying loved ones and dealing with the consequences of the tragedy.
Renewed Questions About Crowd Safety
The incident has renewed concerns about crowd management at major religious gatherings, where thousands of people can converge in confined spaces.
Safety experts often stress the importance of sufficient exits, trained crowd-control personnel, clear emergency announcements and effective arrangements for sudden changes in weather.
As investigations continue, authorities will face pressure to establish whether preventable safety failures contributed to the deaths.
For the families who lost loved ones, however, the immediate reality is one of grief following what should have been a joyful religious celebration.
Utelnova will continue to follow the investigation and report verified developments as more information becomes available.
