Nigeria’s Flamingos have written their names in football history after defeating Japan 2-1 to win the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigerian youngsters secured the historic victory on Saturday, November 7, 2026, becoming the first African nation to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
The final, played in Rabat, Morocco, was a memorable encounter in which Nigeria demonstrated determination, attacking quality and defensive resilience against a strong Japanese side.
The victory represents a major breakthrough for Nigerian women’s football and an important achievement for the African continent.
Bashiru gives Nigeria the breakthrough
Nigeria started the final with confidence, looking to take control of the encounter against Japan.
After several attempts to find an opening, the Flamingos eventually broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Awawu Bashiru.
Bashiru produced a long-range effort that the Japanese goalkeeper, Kou Kadowaki, failed to hold, allowing the ball to slip into the net.
Her goal gave Nigeria a valuable 1-0 advantage heading into the half-time break.
Umejiaku doubles the advantage
The Flamingos returned for the second half with even greater determination.
Just two minutes after the restart, Oluebube Umejiaku extended Nigeria’s lead with an impressive finish in the 47th minute.
The goal put Nigeria firmly in control of the final and brought the team closer to achieving a historic world title.
Umejiaku’s contribution proved particularly important, as she helped Nigeria maintain its advantage against a Japanese team determined to fight back.
Japan fight back, but Nigeria hold firm
Japan refused to surrender despite trailing by two goals.
The Asian side continued searching for a way back into the match and eventually reduced the deficit in the 80th minute.
Fuki Ito scored for Japan, making the score 2-1 and setting up a tense closing period.
However, the Nigerian defenders remained organised and prevented Japan from finding an equaliser.
The final whistle confirmed Nigeria’s historic victory, sparking celebrations among the players and supporters.
A historic achievement for African football
The triumph goes beyond winning a football tournament.
Nigeria have become the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 2008.
It is also the first FIFA women’s world title won by an African national team at any level.
The achievement further strengthens Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
The Flamingos had previously reached the semi-finals and finished third in the 2022 edition in India. Their 2026 triumph represents their greatest achievement in the competition.
Nigeria celebrates its young champions
The victory has brought enormous pride to Nigeria, with the team’s achievement attracting congratulations from football authorities and national leaders.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also congratulated the Flamingos, describing their victory as a proud moment for the country and a landmark achievement for African women’s football.
The success also sends an inspiring message to young girls across Nigeria who dream of becoming professional footballers and representing their country internationally.
For the Flamingos, the mission is complete. They have conquered the world, ended Africa’s wait for the U-17 women’s crown and delivered a historic moment Nigerian football supporters will remember for generations.
Nigeria are world champions! Congratulations to the Flamingos! 🇳🇬🏆
